Doing a search for the term "Intel ME" returned several results, and I am curious about the variations of the different ME drivers' designations.
1: There seems to be many ME's, (Management Engine) as in the initial portion of their nomenclature, so:
ME 8, ME 9, ME 10, ME 11.
2: Within a set of the main ME numbers, e.g.: "ME 10", there is a subset which has the exact same official "Version" e.g.: 10.0.38.1036, yet
they have some sort of "M" designation differing between them.
So here is a copied and pasted list comparing their "Names", download URLs, and Versions:
-------------------------------------------------------------
... Intel® ME 10: Management Engine Driver for Intel® NUC
... /24500/Intel-ME-10-Management-Engine-Driver-for-Intel-NUC
... Version: 10.0.38.1036 (5M)
2a: How does this next differ from the above, except the obvious placement of "(5M)"?
... Intel® ME 10: Management Engine Driver (5M) for Intel® NUC
... /24500/Intel-ME-10-Management-Engine-Driver-5M-for-Intel-NUC
... Version: 10.0.38.1036
------------------------------------------------
... Intel® ME 10: Management Engine Driver for Intel® NUC
... /24499/Intel-ME-10-Management-Engine-Driver-for-Intel-NUC
... Version: 10.0.38.1036 (1.5M)
2b: How does this next differ from the above except the obvious placement of "(1.5M)"?
... Intel® ME 10: Management Engine Driver (1.5M) for Intel® NUC
... /24499/Intel-ME-10-Management-Engine-Driver-1-5M-for-Intel-NUC
... Version: 10.0.38.1036
---------------------------------------------------
What the M???
The like-numbered "M"s download from the same folder on the server
eg: .../24499/... for 1.5M, and .../24500/... for 5M.
They all differ in their dates, and they all vary in the range of OS's they are for.
The "(5M)" results show Windows Server xxx, the "(1.5M)" don't show Server.
All of them include Windows 7 and are 64 bit able.
Meanwhile, they all end with the exact same line:
Installs the Intel® Management Engine (Intel® ME) version 10.0.38.1036 for Intel® NUC.
I am especially concerned because the ME 11's (both in the same URL folder: ... /25395/) with the same Version 11.0.0.1180
list for only 64 bit OS's but explicitly differ between their "(xxxM)" designations calling for a specific generation of CPU, eg:
... .... .... Driver (1.5M) for NUC6i[x]SY
... /25395/Intel-ME-11-Management-Engine-Driver-1-5M-for-NUC6i-x-SY
Since I am running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit on my NUC5i7RYH (16GB RAM, 528GB Samsung 850PRO in the 2.5" SATA slot)
I don't want to put in the wrong software. I love my little NUC!
When I originally bought my NUC in May 2015, I went to (and have often returned to)
https://downloadcenter.intel.com/product/87570/Intel-NUC-Kit-NUC5i7RYH which lists 33 results for
[Any Download Type + Any OS]. When I select [Windows 7, 64 bit] the results drop to 21. Last month, the only ME I found was:
"Intel® ME 10: Management Engine Driver (1.5M) for Intel® NUC
Installs the Intel® Management Engine (Intel® ME) version 10.0.38.1036 for Intel® NUC."
This .zip contained an .exe bit-identical to the one in the .zip I downloaded in May 2015 (running fc /b in the CLI).
Can anyone make this make sense? Like, the nomenclature "M" probably stands for a word that begins with the letter M, right?
Not "mysterious" I hope!
Then, what do the ME's actually do differently?
Searching the Download Center for drivers by Product is a great help, but since it has been suggested to me by someone at Intel,
to install one of the ME 11's, I am not sure even the search by Product returns the "best" results.
If anyone at the forum can, or wants me to parse-down this post, that's fine. I just wanted to prevent misunderstandings by being explicit and exact.
